LP quoted in CP article

by Gerry Nicholls - 21/12/2009

Libertas Post president Gerry Nicholls was quoted in this Canadian Press article on conservatism in Canada.

Here's the quote:

Gerry Nicholls of the conservative online portal Libertas Post says Harper caters to "populist conservative" values such the family, the military and criminal justice - but avoids the issues of individual freedom, smaller government and balanced books.

Nicholls wishes the prime minister would do more to "sell" conservatism and believes having Harper at 24 Sussex Drive actually stalls conservative activism by making it complacent.

"This has kind of neutralized Canada's conservative movement, because Stephen Harper is our guy," he said in an interview.

Debating Canada's reputation

by Gerry Nicholls - 18/12/2009

Had a fun time yesterday debating former Liberal/Bloc Quebecois MP Jean Lapierre. Our topic was Canada's reputation on the world scene when it comes to climate change.Lapierre thought it was important that Al Gore like us. I disagreed. You can see it here. (Note my Christmas tie doesn't show up very well.)

McGuinty right to consider privatization

by Gerry Nicholls - 16/12/2009

(Toronto) Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty deserves credit for considering privatization as an option to reduce the provincial deficit, says Gerry Nicholls, president of Libertas Post.

According to media reports, the Ontario government has hired experts to investigate the possibility of privatizing various provincial agencies.

“Privatization definitely makes sense,” says Nicholls. “Selling assets not only provides cash for a deficit-ridden government, but it would also provide consumers with more efficient service.”

Nicholls says he hopes the Ontario government opts to sell such agencies as the Liquor Control Board and the Ontario Lottery.

“Governments should not be in the business of selling alcohol or encouraging people to buy lottery tickets,” says Nicholls. “Some things re best left to the private sector.”

Harper a Neo-con?

by Gerry Nicholls - 03/12/2009

I recently sent the following letter to the Toronto Star in response to this column.

Dear Sir/Madam:

Eugene Lang and Philip DeMont argue Prime Minister Stephen Harper has an “overriding objective to cut taxes.” (“Big-spender Harper true to his neoconservative roots” November 30)

If that were true, of course, it would also mean the Prime Minister would have an equally overriding objective to refrain from deficit spending.

After all, big deficits today inevitably mean higher taxes tomorrow.

Yet, the Prime Minister has, thanks to his economic “stimulus package”, plunged the country into a sea of red ink.

In other words, the supposedly tax hating Prime Minister is actually imposing a "future tax" on Canadians.

Lang and DeMont call this “neo-conservatism.”

I call it bad economics.

Harper and Custer

by Gerry Nicholls - 22/11/2009

Here's a letter recently published in the National Post in response to this column

Re: A Record Of Conservative Achievement, Adam Daifallah, Nov. 19.

Adam Daifallah argues that except for his massive deficit spending Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been a good conservative.

That's quite an exception. It's like saying except for his battle at Little Bighorn, General George Custer was a good military tactician.
